Welcome back! We hope you all had a wonderful break! This week, our Voices of Survival project work will shift from the reading work we did in book clubs to studying and writing our own performance poetry based on the themes and historical context of the books we read. We have decided to take a break from weekly word studies until after winter break in order to give some extra prep time for our upcoming POLs. This week, students will continue working in their book clubs by reading, journaling, and discussing their books. In writer's workshop, we will be studying figurative language as we get ready to write poetry. Thank you for a wonderful week of SLCs! This week in Humanities, we will continue our book clubs, start investigating the historical time periods in which our books are set, and begin a more in depth study of poetry. We'll also be launching book clubs and giving students some time to prepare for their upcoming Student Led Conferences (SLCs).

This week, we will be wrapping up our reading of A Long Walk to Water by writing poetry about the book. Each student will write a poem for two voices that focuses on a theme from the book and shows the perspectives of two different characters. Socratic Seminar Topics this week... Class A: How can everyone in school feel included? The article explains that more young people now are reporting that they feel lonely. In our discussion, we'll discuss potential reasons for that and discuss ways in which we can ensure that everyone in our community feels like they belong. Class B: Vaccines The articles explain what viruses are, how vaccines work, and some of the controversy around getting vaccines. Students will share their understanding of how vaccines work and discuss whether or not they should be mandatory. Link to Weekly Materials
This week, we will be finishing our class novel, A Long Walk to Water. We'll also be working to answer some of the 'fierce wonderings' that students have generated while reading. On Wednesday, students will do their first Book Pitch, which involves sharing a favorite book from this year with their classmates. This week, we will continue reading A Long Walk to Water as part of our Voices of Survival project work. We also be having our 3rd weekly socratic seminar on Friday. Starting this week, all socratic seminars will be hosted by students. A student from each class chooses a topic, selects at least 2 relevant resources, and creates 5 discussion questions to guide students. Seminar topics this week are:

This week, we will continue digging into our project by starting to read our class novel, A Long Walk to Water. Through our reading we will explore the complexity of our characters and reflect on the use of two different perspectives in telling this story. This week's socratic seminar will focus on the impact of Hurricane Florence. |
