Essential Questions
- How do we identify ourselves?
- How do we identify those around us?
- How are symbols used to express values through art?
- How can we use art to better understand cultures and past civilizations?
- How does perspective play a role in interpreting, understanding, creating symbolism?
Project Work
- Students will learn about the history of Dia de los Muertos and the culture and tradition of celebrating life in the Aztec civilization
- Students will focus on celebrating the life of someone who has impacted them (left an imprint)
- They will interview others who know that person to learn more about their life
- Students will design and create a print that uses symbolism to represent and celebrate the person they chose. The print will also incorporate the style and colors of traditional Dia de los Muertos art
- Students will create an accompanying written piece that celebrates that person’s journey and identity.
The Final Print
- Final pieces will be displayed together, creating a collection of handmade postcards that will be sold.
